America! America! God mend thine every flaw

Friday, February 3rd, 2017

I am fearful that our beloved United States of America is going to follow a path (despite the rules laid down by our founders) that defies to protect us from the fate of Saudi Arabia, China and Russia.  All of those places have no tolerance for intellectual freedom much less freedom of religion or freedom to love.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

I love America with all my heart…   her amber waves of grain are being destroyed by pipelinesHer purple mountain majesty is being blown to bits by coal magnates.

Her beautiful spacious skies will again be choked with soot and fear.  Her brotherhood of good From sea to shining sea will have to hide and whisper in corners and alleys.

Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law.  Self-control is likened to weakness and liberty to peril.

I weep, and seek the comfort of the like minded.  I cling to to the lovers of clean food and thought, pristine water and mind, clear air and soul.  Greed is the enemy of all those things.

America please see what is happening.  Please embrace what our founders saw and tried to keep for everyone after them.  O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years

US Chamber of Commerce and Mr Donahue

Monday, November 28th, 2016

What is it? and who is he?

The US Chamber of Commerce (USCC) is not a part of the government, although, it was created by President William Howard Taft  around 1912 to go against the Labor movement which had become organized and powerful.

Tom Donohue became head of the organization in 1997.

He disliked the idea of healthcare reform that involves providing healthcare for every American regardless of income or ability to pay.

Mr Donohue disagrees with the scientific consensus that climate change is enhanced by human energy use.

He opposed Dodd/Frank legislation and portions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act which was signed in to law by George W. Bush after the Enron and Worldcom scandals and arrests.

He thinks a company should be able to sue a country.  Phillip-Morris vs Uruguay was a case where a tobacco company actually sued the country of Uruguay for implementing strict measures to prolong life and promote health through organized efforts to get tobacco out of the country.  Monsanto is suing countries that are disallowing Monsanto products due to health concerns as well.

Well, now the USCC is the largest lobbying organization in America.  It’s current agenda includes –>

  1.  Establishing the congressional budget for the United States Government for fiscal year 2017.  Why would he care about the congressional budget?
  2.  Providing for congressional disapproval of the Environmental Protection Agency relating to the definition of “waters of the United States” under the Clean Water Act.
  3.  Disapproving a rule submitted by the Environmental Protection Agency relating to “National Ambient Air Quality Standards for Ozone”. clean air and water are too expensive to maintain and do a profitable business I guess.
  4.  Providing for congressional disapproval of the Environmental Protection Agency relating to “Standards of Performance for Greenhouse Gas Emissions from New, Modified, and Reconstructed and existing Stationary Sources: Electric Utility Generating Units”  He wants to keep oil, gas and coal
  5.  Disapproving the rule submitted by the Department of Labor relating to the definition of the term “Fiduciary”.  I wonder what is wrong with the term Fiduciary?
  6.  EPA Science Advisory Board Reform Act of 2015.  Is it possible to reform science?
  7.  There are more, I just listed the first few.  They have their irons in lots of pots.

$79,205,000 has been spent on lobbying in 2016.  They spent $84,730,000 in 2015 so they may surpass that come January 1.  Whoo boy there is a lot of money in money isn’t there?  Not much money to be made in healthcare for all I guess.  Healthy, vegetable eating, non-smoking, solar powered masses are bad for the economy.  Mr Donohue, I think you are bad for the planet.

How did you spend 2014?  What did you learn and how did you make yourself a better person?

Ellen Degeneres took a selfie with Meryl Streep and other very famous and successful actors.  They are just like us, sometimes a bit self-centered, sometimes a bit silly, and sometimes just feeling in the moment.  Perhaps this tweet could teach us to lighten up, be silly, impress yourself sometimes and enjoy the moment.

The fight for net neutrality — why should we care and why should we vote for those who care?

“the company that connects you to the internet
does not get to control what you do on the internet.”

— Public Knowledge

It doesn’t take much research to understand the importance of speaking loud and often to help our elected politicians understand the need to keep the internet open for innovation and out of the hands of the cable companies and monopolies who might use it for the public bad and the corporate good.

microplastics that you can’t see are in our oceans, lakes, rivers, streams and drinking water.  Tiny specks of plastic that are purposefully used in toothpaste and face wash are accumulating in our water supply and they will never go away.   The good news is smart people are bringing it to our attention and so big companies like Proctor and Gamble and Johnson and Johnson are taking them out of their products.  The other good news is more and more towns and states are banning Styrofoam and plastic bags.  http://www.envirosense.com/plastic-pollution/

Theology vs Science

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

within one generationThis is a legitimate theory in my mind because no Buddhist has ever started a war.   TJ and the gang had written some stuff about God, religion, and spirituality that I’ve been collecting.  Here are a few…

“Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because if there be one he must approve of the homage of reason more than that of blindfolded fear.”  (<– I love that line) and “Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between church and State.”
-Thomas Jefferson
I refer to him as “TJ”

We have already compared the benefits of theology and science.  When the theologian governed the world, it was covered with huts and hovels for the many, palaces and cathedrals for the few.  To nearly all the children of men, reading and writing were unknown arts.  The poor were clad in rags and skins — they devoured crusts, and gnawed bones.  The day of Science dawned, and the luxuries of a century ago are the necessities of today.  Men in the middle ranks of life have more of the conveniences and elegances than the princes and kings of the theological times.  Above and over all this, is the development of the mind.  There is more value in the brain of an average man of today — of a master-mechanic, of a chemist, of a naturalist, of an inventor, than there was in the brain of the world four hundred years ago.  These blessings did not fall from the skies.  These benefits did not drop from the outstretched hands of priests.  They were not found in cathedrals or behind altars —  neither were they searched for with holy candles.  They were not discovered by the closed eyes of prayer, nor did they come in answer to superstitious supplication.  They are the children of freedom, the gifts of reason, observation and experience — and for them all, man is indebted to man.

Robert Green Ingersoll, “God In The Constitution

Faith

Churches are becoming political organizations…     It probably will not be long until the churches will divide as sharply upon political, as upon theological questions; and when that day comes, if there are not liberals enough to hold the balance of power, this Government will be destroyed.  The liberty of man is not safe in the hands of any church. Wherever the Bible and sword are in partnership, man is a slave.  All laws for the purpose of making man worship God, are born of the same spirit that kindled the fires of the auto da fe, and lovingly built the dungeons of the inquisition.  All laws defining and punishing blasphemy — making it a crime to give your honest ideas about the Bible, or to laugh at the ignorance of the  ancient Jews, or to enjoy yourself on the Sabbath, or to give your opinion of Jehovah, were passed by impudent bigots, and should be at once repealed by honest men.  An infinite God ought to be able to protect himself, without going in partnership with State Legislatures.    Robert Green Ingersoll, Some Mistakes of Moses, Section III, “The Politicians,” in Works, Dresden Edition, Volume 2

Our civilization is not Christian.  It does not come from the skies.  It is not a result of “inspiration.”  it is the child of invention, of discovery, of applied knowledge — that is to say, of science.  When man becomes great and grand enough to admit that all have equal rights; when thought is untrammeled; when worship shall consist in doing useful things; when religion means the discharge of obligations to our fellow-men, then, and not until then, will the world be civilized.

Robert Green Ingersoll, “Reply To The Indianapolis Clergy” The Iconoclast, Indianapolis, Indiana (1882)

human experience

“Among other things, you’ll find that you’re not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You’re by no means alone on that score, you’ll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now. Happily, some of them kept records of their troubles. You’ll learn from them—if you want to. Just as some day, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It’s a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn’t education. It’s history. It’s poetry.”
J. D. Salinger

A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.  A soul mates purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life, then introduce you to your spiritual master…”
Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love)

not a bad life

——————————————————————————————————————————————————

I’m not thinking I’m going to meet my spiritual master until I leave this life.  I listen to the theories and observe the actions of others while I’m here.  The power of a strong faith or good karma seem to be as useful and real and tangent as scientific theories.   Jo

It is our turn to chase the predator…

When good people don’t vote — bad things happen.

In 2010, Rick Scott was promoted and elected by the tea partywe are now living through the callous dismantling and privatizing of Florida government. Vote and send the creeps and the groups that support them to the rubbish pile and label them the past.

PS:  take a look at this latest bulls**t–>

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/state/world-war-ii-bronze-star-winner-resents-fla-2380710.html

Doesn’t Florida Governor Rick Scott and his posse cause mental discomfort for the GOP? I would think so. I would be mortified if someone I voted for continually bullied the masses and carried on with his innate criminal greed while serving the people of Florida. Without a doubt I feel bad for the Republicans who did not realize what he would do when they voted for him and are now outraged. They voted for him. Message to the GOP –>please please learn from this guy and don’t nominate tea party candidates.

And furthermore — It is essential to re-elect our President.  I feel much safer and more represented.  His National Security policies and his health care policies are for all of us, including those who don’t like him.  The Republican nominee seems to want only what is right for his money cronies.  Although, he may be lying just to get their money (he’s been known to do that).  His healthcare policy in his home state was actually copied by the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) which was designed by a nonpartisan government committee after single payer healthcare was rejected.

Tanks vs Trains

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
Florida Governor Rick Scott turned down $2.4 billion in Federal money for a high speed rail project despite knowledge of a newly revealed Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) study that forecast the venture would net a $10 million surplus in its very first year of operation.
State and Federal court battles are holding back the entire industry of high speed rail.  Meanwhile war machines carry on unobstructed?

One great train and track needs to be built to prove its usefulness.   A wonderful provider of jobs and a peaceful industry of builders and innovative minds to do their thing.  Not to mention a very comfortable way to study, read, sleep off a hangover, prepare a power point, get your homework done,  have some lunch,  cuddle with a loved one,  make friends with strangers, decrease your footprint, meet a famous person, pee without stopping at a scary rest stop, do needlepoint, or just enjoy the view without worrying about driving into the swamp, while getting from point A to point B.

The United States government pays companies to build tanks and jets to provide security and to protect the nation from bad guys.  But if the government pays a corporation to build solar panels, high speed rail, or windmills to provide energy independence  (which is a better source of security) than it is called socialist government intervention or “Big Government”.   Why isn’t it called socialist government intervention for us to subsidize the building of war machines?

Top 10 Fastest Trains 1

Shanghai Maglev is the fastest train in the world.  It’s operational speed of 430km/h and average speed of 251kmph. (156 mph)  The Maglev started commercial operations in April 2004.

It runs on the 30.5km Shanghai Maglev Line, which is the first commercially operated high-speed magnetic levitation line, extending from Longyang Road Station of Metro Line 2 and ending at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

Shanghai Maglev is owned and operated by Shanghai Maglev Transportation Development Co. (SMTDC). The train was constructed by a joint venture of Siemens and ThyssenKrupp.

Tanks are only useful for war?  Tank builders therefore need war.

Why can’t we also subsidize weapons of peace that contribute to energy independence?  Things like high speed rail that run on magnets (please see above), and Renewables.  Things that keep the planet clean and alive, and we get to live out our 70 to 80 years in peace?  Unfortunately, some people just don’t get peace.  Maybe a nice long clean peaceful life is achievable.

1% vs 99%

Wouldn’t it be better if the TV and radio personalities would talk  about facts rather than presuming fault?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Wouldn’t it be better if we stopped listening to the loud whiners?  Shut them off, change the station;  too busy admiring people who are discovering and inventing stuff.

The desire to classify ourselves is human nature.  Humans are influenced by each other to impose group boundaries.  For instance the 1% versus the 99%.  The 99% is vast,  not cozy;  whereas the 1% are in bed together cuddling and clinging.  Here are some pretty interesting things being done by members of both groups .

http://www.humdingerwind.com/#/wi_large/

Inventor Shawn Frayne has come up with a device that harnesses the power of wind without any rotating parts. Instead, his company’s Windbelts capture energy using fluttering fabric. Air passes over a taut membrane, it induces a vibration, somewhat akin to a violin bow.   Magnets mounted on the membrane bounce back and forth between metal coils, inducing an electric current.

What makes this so way cool is that it can be put on fences in urban areas and it can be palm sized or room sized and the materials it is made from are all available right here in the good ole USA.

Richard Branson has started a “Carbon War Room”.  Does he qualifiy as part of the 1%?    He has an influence on them.  He concerns himself with the future of the planet and makes money doing it.  His latest venture is opening a shop  near the White House for Venture Capitalists to hang out and find investment solutions.  International corporations like Maersk, the global tanker operator, 3M,   and General Electric Co., the major U.S. maker of gas turbines, windmills and appliances;  find there is money to be made and profits enhanced by cutting noxious pollutants and carbon dioxide emissions.

Pegasus Global Holdings Announces Plans to Develop World’s Largest Tech Testing and Evaluation Center

http://techcitement.com/admin/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/ghosttown.jpg

Pegasus Global Holdings bought a town in New Mexico.   They needed a place to create and test green technology innovations.  How cool is that?  Is this the enemy doing cool things with their money?   Pegasus Global Holdings is actually one of those big scary conglomerates making billions from war tools and satellites; which qualifies them as a member of the 1%.  Perhaps refocusing their moneymaking prowess on technologies that have an end result of a healthier, cleaner, and subsequently happier planet is a good thing  —  even if their motivation isn’t benevolent grace.

A.I.M. Interview: Algenol’s CEO Paul Woods

Paul Woods is a hero.   He has a biorefinery  in Lee County, Florida.  It will consume almost two dry tons per day of carbon dioxide obtained from industrial sources, and will produce 100,000 gallons of fuel-grade ethanol per year.  Whats not to love about that.  He is an innovative scientist and has become pretty wealthy by being smart and steadfast, he is one of  the 99%.

temperature

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2009/images/1208natltemp.png

…so according to this graph, unless the NOAA is lying, the average temperature in 2008 was about 54 degrees F.  The average temp in 1895 was about 52 degrees F.  Perhaps this isn’t significant, but, then again, perhaps it is.

If you look at it in degrees C it is only a difference of about 11.3 to 12.1.  Not impressive enough to get you out of your Ram tough truck?

Smart scientists are having a blue bloody bird over this stuff.  We’re so busy being mad at Republicans or Democrats or Wall Street or Mexicans we aren’t looking at what is really important.  This planet isn’t just a big floating rock, it is alive and we need to keep it that way.  There isn’t another live planet for us to go to.

Happy 1/1/11!

Saturday, January 1st, 2011

Isn’t New Years Day fun?  You can wander anywhere saying Happy New Year to anyone and no one gets offended.  If you happen to be on a warm sunny beach walk on New Years Day many smiles are returned to you when you wish strangers a Happy New Year.  “Love actually is all around.”

Last month while Christmas Shopping a sideways glance was given to me by a checkout girl when I finished up our transaction with wishing her a “Merry Christmas”.    No offense was meant.  It is shameful that the season of  “Peace on Earth”  causes such profound separation.  If you say “happy holiday” or “enjoy the season” you may experience equally disdainful looks from those who believe that “Merry Christmas” should be the announcement.

I love the theory behind Christmas.  The peace and goodwill and the idea that Jesus taught us to love one another.  it just isn’t what seems to prevail.

Water

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010
Good Morning!
water_coffee

While drinking my hot beverage made from the beans of a tree and paying my water bill I started thinking more about water.  Coffee bean trees grow because of water and my coffee is brewed in water.

Water keeps our exquisite Earth alive.  It saves us and our earth from being like other lifeless planets.  Of course, we nor the earth would be alive long if all the earths water was contaminated.

water in you

Water plus carbon and a few other minerals make us.

This critter is savoring that little orb of clean water the way I am savoring my coffee right now.  I am a lifeless mineral glob without my Java.

To give anything life, to keep anything alive it must have water.

Water is so life giving that I think maybe God is water and we are drilling for –> well,  you get my point?
